Driver Arrested After Hitting Cop with Vehicle

A man was charged with vehicular assault in a car accident, Thursday, when his car struck a motorcycle operated by an off-duty New York City police officer. The officer sustained critical injuries in the accident, police said.

The man, 29, of River Vale, was drunk when his vehicle hit the rear of the motorcycle, police said.

The off-duty officer, 27, of West Nyack, suffered severe leg, back and head injuries. He was wearing his helmet at the time of the accident.

Officers at the scene determined he was intoxicated and he was placed under arrest. Along with a second degree vehicular assault charge, he is also being charged with drunk driving in the second degree, driving with a blood alcohol level more than 0.08 and for following too closely behind another vehicle.

Currently he is being held on $50,000 bail, at Rockland County Jail.
